Barwise car park and picnic site will be closed from 7am on Wednesday due to a dozen trees being removed as part of a wider project to improve the Barwise area at Towneley Park.

The car park will re-open as normal on Saturday, April 25th.

Simon Goff, head of greenspaces and amenities at Burnley Council, said: “We are improving the car park and picnic area by thinning some trees that were planted when the car park was first constructed in 1970s and which have become large and overgrown, causing too much shade. In addition to felling work, we’ll install extra picnic benches, making the area brighter and more welcoming for our park visitors.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to our visitors. Alternative car parking will be available at Riverside and Woodgrove Road car parks. We intend to get the work completed as quickly and efficiently as possible so that normal use of both areas can resume.”

Woodchip from the trees will be used as safety surfacing for the children play area and the timber will be recycled and some pieces used as play equipment.

The council has obtained a felling licence from the Forestry Commission to carry out the work as part of a broader woodland management programme for the whole of Towneley Park, between now and 2020.

The improvements to the park are being done in conjunction with the Friends of Towneley Park.
