Electricity substation fire cut power to 8,000 homes in Burnley

Power has been restored to around 8,000 homes in Burnley, which were temporarily cut off following an explosion at a substation in the early hours of yesterday.

The incident happened around 2-35am when a fire broke out following a gas explosion at the sub-station in Brownside Road, Worsthorne-with-Hurstwood.

A spokesmann for Electricity North West said: “A fault with electrical equipment caused the loss of power to 8,017 properties at 2-34am yesterday.

“We responded immediately and by using our automatic restoration system, we were able to restore power to 4,384 properties in a few minutes and a further 1,395 properties within the hour.

“Engineers attended site and restored power to the remaining 2,238 properties at 12-05pm.

Two fire crews from Nelson worked with Electricity Northwest and Cadant engineers, and used a powder extinguisher and thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.

The powercut has also forced the temporary closure of nearby Worsthorne Primary School which was without water and power.
