Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment Freedom of Borough in Clitheroe - where and when you can see the historic events

TODAY - Thursday, March 10th - is a red letter day for Ribble Valley, as the Freedom of the Borough is formally conferred on The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, which currently has around 40 soldiers from this area serving in its ranks.

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Clitheroe as 130 soldiers from the Regiment’s 1st Battalion parade through the town, marching to music from the Band of the King’s Division.

Below are approximate timings for the event, but plan to arrive early to find somewhere to park and a good viewpoint for this historic day.

10-45 a.m. – the 1st Battalion, Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, will assemble at the bottom of Moor Lane, Clitheroe, to march up Moor Lane and down Castle Street into Market Place.

11 to 11-20 a.m. – Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. Lois Rimmer will take a general salute from the battalion and the regiment’s commanding officer will invite the Mayor to inspect the troops. The Mayor will ask Brigadier Mike Griffiths CBE to accept a scroll conferring the Freedom of Ribble Valley on the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment. The Brigadier will respond and the Mayor will accept a gift from the regiment on behalf of the borough. The Mayor will invite onlookers to give the regiment three cheers.

11-20 a.m. – the commanding officer will ask permission for the battalion to march off. The battalion will continue its march from Market Place to the bottom of York Street, where the soldiers will fallout and disarm.

Motorists should note the affected streets will be closed to all traffic for the duration of the event.
