Burnley magistrates were told how Thomas Cameron Dooley (25) had put the haul in his pocket when he struck at 7am in the store in the town before he was spotted by a security officer watching the CCTV.

Dooley, who has recently been released from jail, told police: "I don't go round shoplifting and I am sorry for what I have done. I am putting it down to being drunk at the time."

The defendant, of Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, admitted theft on April 28th and was given a six-month conditional discharge and must pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Mr David Lawson, defending Dooley, told the hearing: "Not surprisingly, given the facts of this case, alcohol is an issue. He has been referred for alcohol treatment."
