Beer festivals have their detractors. However, I’m sure the majority of discerning ale quaffers look forward to these beery, diverse social gatherings.

Pendle Beer Festival is undoubtedly one of the highlights in the Pendle social calendar.

Now firmly established as a premier beer festival there will be over 150 beers and ciders, to tempt the taste buds this year.

It will be a varied national line-up of beverages which will present you with a pleasing selection dilemma.

One thing I have noticed about the beer list for 2016, is the plethora of styles, flavours and strengths on offer.

The organisers, East Lancashire CAMRA, appear to have recognised the increase, in the diversity of tastes for cask ales.

For example, beers from the wood will be available.

A choice of six are on the list. They include two from the Fighting Cocks brewery in Burnley, namely, Spaghetti Stout and the bitter Blighty.

These beers have been infused with a unique flavour, as a result of being aged in wooden barrels. I’m sure they will prove very popular.

A beer I will certainly be hunting down, is Kirkstall’s Hugh Hefnerweiss. This is a hefty 7.4% German style wheat beer. These beers are typically fruity, dry and spicy and it is a most welcome addition - and another example of how our palates are changing.

I don’t wish to alarm the more traditional beery brethren and your tastes will be more than well catered for, at the Muni.

You will find many of the locality’s breweries represented with lots of their popular, tasty ales to satisfy the more conservative palates.

We are fortunate in East Lancashire, to have numerous quality brewhouses. And two stand out local beers, in my opinion, are available.

Firstly, Worsthorne’s Blackthorne Stout(4.9%) is recommended. A rich, robust and complex beer. Dark fruits, vanilla, chocolate and roasted malt flavours are all detected - a brewing masterpiece.

Secondly, Moorhouse’s Winter Looms(4.2%),will prove popular. A bitter style beer it is amber in presentation. It offers creamy caramel malt, floral and subtle spiced flavours which are blended to perfection. A proper smoothie.
