Death of businessman behind pub and restaurant

Mr Bob Seed was known throughout East Lancashire, but will be best remembered in Burnley as the man who opened the former Manor Barn pub and restaurant in Padiham Road.

Mr Seed had lived in the building, Lower Close Farm, until 1980 when he converted it into the Manor Barn, which went on to have a chequered history.

A colourful character according to his family, Mr Seed unsuccessfully tried to expand the pub by building a hotel before admitting bankruptcy in 1985.

He also owned B and S Plant Hire in Padiham, and previously ran a farm in Roughlee with his first wife Irene.

His daughter Susan Nuttall, who lives in Barrowford, said: “Dad was known for miles around because of his different business interests and the various places he lived.

“He was originally from Nelson, but was living in Baxenden with his second wife Christine when he died at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

“Dad was a character. He was very confident and dedicated to work.

“He was very hard-working and I don’t think he ever really retired. Dad was always building and working on things.

“Away from work, he loved gardening, the sun and enjoyed holidays abroad.”

Mr Seed also leaves eldest daughter Deborah, son Jimmy, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday at Trinity Baptist Church in Accrington before cremation at Huncoat.
