Thief helped herself to perfume and meat

Claire McMillan (34), who had previously clocked up a "terrible record" helped herself to a £20 bottle of perfume from TK Maxx - where she was banned from - and meat worth £72 from Marks and Spencer. The hauls were recovered from the defendant, who had tried to run off from a security officer at TK Maxx.

McMillan, of Oat Street, Padiham, admitted theft on October 19th and November 10th, both in Burnley, at the town's magistrates' court. Deputy District Judge Joanne Hirst told her she had stayed out of trouble for periods of two years and three years. She continued: "I know you can do it. I'm giving you a chance on this occasion."

The defendant was given a 12-month conditional discharge and must pay a £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

Mr Mark Williams (defending) said McMillan had a terrible record in the past. She and her boyfriend were both quite badly assaulted in their home and had had to move.

The solicitor continued: "She lapsed back into drugs misuse, which has led to this spate of offences."

Mr Williams said the defendant had been to Inspire, the drug treatment service and had been given an appointment. He added: "What she desperately wants is to get back on a methadone programme."
