Police warning after man posing as gas engineer stole from Clitheroe pensioner

Elderly residents, especially those living alone, are being asked to be on their guard after a man posing as a gas engineer tricked his way into a house and stole property.

The warning has been issued by PCSO Mick Kearns-Turner, of Clitheroe Police, after the distraction burglary on July 9th.

The offender was let into a house in the St Mary's area of Clitheroe after telling the elderly resident he was from the gas board and was there to check the boiler. After the "gas man" left, the resident discovered items had been taken from the property and contacted British Gas.

Unfortunately, British Gas confirmed they hadn't sent anyone to the house that day.

Police are investigating the incident

PCSO Kearns-Turner is investigating the incident and is appealing for witnesses. He said: "If you saw anyone acting suspicious in the area or may have CCTV footage of someone of concern, please e-mail [email protected]

"We are appealing to anyone with elderly relatives to remind them to not let anyone in their houses and always ask for ID. If they won't show ID they should close the door and ring us on 101."
