Burnley magistrates were told how Howard Crabtree (50) had been shouting at the occupants of a house on Scarlett Street in the town in the late-night trouble. He swore at officers, telling them he was homeless and had nowhere to sleep.

The defendant wanted to go into a custody so he had somewhere to sleep and ended up spending a night in the cells.

Crabtree, of no fixed address, admitted being drunk and disorderly on March 27. He was fined £20, with a £30 victim surcharge.

Mr John Rusius, defending Crabtree, said: "He is an alcoholic. That started when he came out of prison, went for a drink and couldn't stop."

The solicitor added: "He is a man with a lot of difficulties getting through from day to day."
