Arron Burrows (20) had held the four foot weapon above his head and repeatedly told Aaron Bull: “Step one foot closer and I’m going to smash your head in.”

The town’s magistrates heard how Burrows dropped the post when police arrived and ran off down a ginnel. He was caught and claimed self- defence.

The defendant, who had no previous convictions, admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards Mr Bull and damage, committed on March 18th.

Burrows, of Reedley Marina, Barden Lane, received eight weeks in custody, suspended for a year, with 100 hours unpaid work. He must pay £300 compensation.

Prosecutor Mrs Kerry Grieve told the court Amy Howarth was at her home with the defendant and another man when she and Burrows argued. She contacted Mr Bull, another friend, and asked him to go to the address.

Kamran Yousaf (defending) said Burrows deeply regretted what he had done and alcohol clearly played a part.
