Paramedics were called at around 7-50pm on Wednesday (March 25th) to an address on Crawford Street, where a man - later named as 35-year-old Andrius Kadzevicius - had been found unresponsive. He was taken to hospital, where it was established he had suffered a bleed on the brain.

Initially it was unclear how he came about his injuries and last week we put out an appeal asking for help tracing his last movements. Detectives now believe he was assaulted.

Mr Kadzevicius remains in Royal Preston Hospital in a critical condition.

Detectives are continuing to appeal for information about this incident and would now like to hear from anybody with information about a disturbance which occurred just before midnight on Tuesday March 24th in the Rutland Street area of Nelson.

Det Ch Insp Zoe Russo, of Lancashire Police’s Force Major Investigation Team, said: “We have been continuing our enquiries since last week and we now believe Mr Kadzevicius was assaulted, causing his head injury. We are still appealing for information about how he came about his injuries and in particular are looking into whether a disturbance on Tuesday evening – March 24th – may be connected.

“We understand people may be reluctant to come forward during this time especially if they have not been following the government guidelines about saying at home but I would reassure them that our immediate concern is to find out what happened to Mr Kadzevicius and I would urge anyone who has any information, no matter how insignificant they may feel it to be, to come forward and speak to us.

“The residents around Crawford Street and surrounding area may see detectives carrying out house to house enquiries, but those officers will be carrying identification and will conduct their enquiries safely in line with social distancing advice.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting log reference 1513 of March 25th.
