The closure comes as a result of long term staff illness with the cells expected to be re-opened in mid-December

A spokesman for Lancashire Constabulary said: "It is currently expected that it will re-open in mid-December, after a planned Custody Officer Training Course.

"The closure is a result of significant levels of long term staff sickness and the constabulary having regard to both staff and detainee welfare.

"All detainees will be transported a short distance further to Greenbank custody office at Blackburn for the duration of the closure. This will allow for a more effective and resilient custody experience for both staff and detainees.

"Whilst the police cells will be closed, the court cells used by GeoAmey will remain open, meaning a negligible impact on day to day business for Burnley Magistrates' Court who have been informed and are aware of the closure."

County Coun, Tony Martin, who is also a borough councillor for Trinity, said: "It's really important the custody suite is re-opened as soon as possible. It links to the magistrates' court and if it's closed for long it puts the future of the courts themselves under threat. It's vital that its re-opened and I will be taking the matter up with the police commissioner as early as possible."
