Brave member of the public detains knife-wielding woman in Nelson

Police are appealing for witnesses after a courageous member of the public detained a woman wielding a knife in Nelson town centre.

The shocking incident happened on Wednesday afternoon when the man wrestled the woman to the ground in Railway Street and awaited for police to arrive.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were called to a report of a female with a knife in the town centre of Nelson.

"When officers arrived on Railway Street they have noticed a brave man had detained the female on the floor and was awaiting for the police to attend. Police have since recovered a knife and a 28 year old female has been arrested on suspicion of affray and being in possession of a bladed article.

"Officers, whilst on the scene, noticed that many members of the community were stood filming the incident on their mobile phones whilst the suspect was being restrained. If anyone has video footage of this incident could it please be emailed to [email protected]"
