Burnley magistrates were told how Dagan Brandon Lee Jeffrey (20) had a previous conviction for no insurance but had never passed a driving test.

He had decided to take the vehicle, bought with his benefits cash, for a spin.

The defendant told police he had made off from the accident scene as he was scared. One of the gym-goers had recognised him and had given his details to the police.

Jeffrey has now been banned for 12 months before he has even got a licence.

The defendant, of Cameron Street, Burnley, admitted driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and having no insurance, on Daneshouse Road, Burnley, on March 16th.

He was fined £120, with a £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs and given six points.

He already had six points and was disqualified under the totting up procedure.

Geoff Ireland, in mitigation, said Jeffrey had just got his benefits and bought the vehicle from Manchester intending to give it to his brother.
