Colne writer’s tiny poems celebrate Pendle landscape

ADMIRERS of the Pennine landscape will enjoy dipping into a new illustrated and hand-printed poetry book, created by a Pendle writer and artist team.

Curlew on Rain Slack is a unique collection of Japanese-style Haiku written by Pendle Council worker Sarah Lee, of Colne, and illustrated by Roy Hubbard, of Brierfield.

Haiku is a 16th Century style of Japanese poetry, inspired by nature, which uses just three lines and 17 syllables.

Sarah said; “These tiny poems were inspired by many walks in the local countryside.

“Although this first book focuses on the Yorkshire Dales, I am working on a second collection on Pendle and Yorkshire’s Three Peaks, which will feature Weets, Pendle and Boulsworth Hills.”

“Curlew on Rain Slack” is handprinted, hand-stitched and bound by Andrew Morrison of Two Wood Press in a limited edition of just 200 signed and numbered copies.

Sarah has organised a Haiku workshop for members of the public to enjoy at The Bookshop in Colne on January 15th from 1-30 p.m. until 3-30 p.m. Copies of the new book will also be available.

Sarah said: “I’m keen for other people to try writing Haiku about our fantastic landscape. We’ll be writing about Pendle Hill and other local places. Just come along and enjoy exploring the area through poetry, no experience is necessary.

“We have left some blank pages at the back of our book for people to write their own poetry.”
