Coffin factory fire leads to main road closure in Nelson

The Lambert factory in Edgar Street was extensively damaged and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service sent eight pumps, an aerial ladder platform and a mobile fire station.

Leeds Road was closed between the Reedyford Road and Rakeshouse Road junctions after the fire was discovered at around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

By 9 a.m. fire crews were still damping down the fire, which had swept through most of the factory and gone through the roof.

The factory provides coffins for many local funeral directors, so the fear is there will be an impact on local funerals.
