Clitheroe to host food poverty conference

The conference will discuss food poverty at home and abroad, asking what people can do to make a difference.

Staged at St Mary’s Centre, Church Street, on Saturday. May 10th, starting at 9-30 am, it will mark the beginning of Christian Aid Week.

“Feed a Friend” will start with findings about food poverty locally from Ruth Haldane, who is the manager of Ribble Valley Foodbank. The conference will also hear about positive steps to tackle food poverty in Kenyan schools from the Solomon Project, which is actively supported by The Grand in Clitheroe.

In addition, the conference will hear from Fred Uttley, a Cafod representative living in Simonstone who cycles across the country to encourage people to take action to tackle poverty.

Dave Hardman, of Christian Aid, will highlight the steps which can be taken to achieve lasting change.

“Feed a Friend” will conclude with a light lunch for which offers of homemade soup would be most welcome.

Conference chairman, the Rev. Andrew Whitehead said: “It is important for us to understand the reasons for food poverty in our own community and overseas.

action to achieve sustainable solutions.”
