Nathan Jeffries (18) hit one man in the head with a beer glass he was holding when the man bumped into him in the busy Brown Cow pub and turned to apologise.

The man suffered a cut to his head, but did not require hospital treatment.

But while Jeffries, of Whalley Road, was on bail for that attack, he set upon a second man in a nightclub in the town. In this incident, the man bumped into him on the dancefloor and Jeffries dealt a blow to his head, smashing his glasses and knocking him unconscious.

The man was out cold for around 15 minutes and taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary where he was given six stitches to the side of his mouth.

Jeffries pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm and wounding. Recorder Timothy Ryder, sentencing, said: “You are still very young and have a lot of growing up to do.”

He said the offences were so serious that only an immediate prison sentence was justified and ordered him to spend a year in youth custody.
