Children dice with death running across M65

A stark warning has been issued to Burnley youngsters after a group of boys were spotted playing a dangerous game of “chicken” on the M65 this week.

Both Lancashire Police and the Highways Agency have spoken out following the incident, which is believed to have taken place between Burnley and Brierfield on Monday night.

At 7-33pm, police received reports of three children running across the eastbound carriageway to the central reservation near Howden’s Joinery, Brierfield.

At 7-35pm, a further report was made of a child cycling on the hard shoulder towards Colne.

There was no trace of the youngsters when the police arrived.

Police Insp. Paul Goodall said: “This is a danger not only to the individuals but to other road users as well.

“I would ask people to not play on carriageways. The speed of vehicles on the motorway could result in a very serious incident.”

And a Highways Agency spokesman added: “This is something both we and the police take very seriously.

“It is incredibly dangerous to walk near, and to certainly play on, the motorway.”
