The safety barrier in the hard shoulder is also in need of repair and a full or partial closure of the clockwise carriageway is likely to continue for several hours.

Highways Agency traffic officers have been at the scene helping to manage traffic with an ‘up and over’ diversion in place using the junction exit and entry slip roads to help drivers bypass the incident scene. However, congestion in the area remains very heavy with clockwise M60 and southbound M66 routes particularly affected and drivers are being urged to avoid the area if possible.

Drivers are urged to check travel conditions before setting out on journeys.
