Businessman Bob dies in California

Former Whalley resident Frederick Robert Blakey, known as Bob to his many friends, has died aged 84 at Pacific Palisades, California.

Bob had recently moved there, in declining health, with his wife, Janet, to be closer to their daughter, Gillian, and her family.

The couple had been frequent visitors to the West Coast of the USA for more than 20 years.

Bob was born in Burnley and throughout his working life had been a successful businessman.

Through the family business, L. Blakey (Finance), he worked with several thousand clients across Burnley and Nelson for 45 years.

Supported by his well-known father, James Blakey, of Cleveland Mount, Burnley, Bob was recognised early as a promising footballer, playing for Burnley Colts as centre-half.

During National Service he represented Dorset, while stationed there with the Pay Corps. After qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1956, he settled in Whalley where he lived until 2012.

Throughout his life, he had a passion for sport and education. He was chairman of Westholme Sports Association, Blackburn, and was a keen tennis and badminton player. In later years he was an avid bridge player on the club circuit.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, their children Steven, Gillian and Nicholas plus nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be held in Los Angeles.
