Burnley teacher and sportsman Mick Ennis dies

Sports legend Mick (61) died at Pendleside Hospice surrounded by family and friends this morning.

Mick taught at Blessed Trinity RC College and the school called a special assembly at 2-50pm to tell pupils and pray together.

Prior to Blessed Trinity, Mick taught at St Theodore’s where he was a widely admired sportsman and teacher who brought through the likes of England cricket ace James Anderson, Manchester United ‘Class of 92’ star Chris Casper and Burnley midfielder John Mullin, alongside his brother Paul, as well as Reading striker Ollie Norwood.

Generations of students over 30 years thrived off his advice and help so much so that a charity football match was organised by his former pupils two weeks ago at Burnley Belvedere between St Ted’s Old Boys and the Vintage Clarets to raise money for Pendleside.

There were also donations for an auction from cricketer Anderson, footballer Norwood, Burnley striker Danny Ings, Burnley-born Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez and Phil Neville, who donated a ‘Class of 92’ signed shirt, among others.

Mick attended the match on the day and was proud of the fundraising effort, which topped more than £12,000 last week.
