Burnley ‘Shameless’ star tells of suicide bid

One of Burnley’s most famous daughters has revealed a series of shocking secrets in her eagerly-awaited autobiography.

Tales of how “Shameless” star Alice Barry was almost raped in a popular Burnley park and how she tried to take her life feature in the sensational “Who The Hell Is Alice”.

In the book Alice tells of how her uncle made sexual advances towards her at the age of 12, how she was brutally abused at a Burnley Catholic school and of how her beloved ‘Mam’ lost an arm in an horrific cotton mill accident.

As well as the dark side, Alice writes of her unending love for the town of Burnley and its characters and looks back fondly on her marriage to husband Terry.

And she concludes with a fascinating insight of life in the award-winning cult television show “Shameless” which brought her fame late in life.

Speaking to the Express ahead of her book launch, which will include a signing session at Burnley’s W.H. Smith store, Alice said now was the right time.

“Writing my autobiography is something I’ve been thinking about doing for a while now,” she said.

“I would write bits of it here and there in the studio between filming. It took around 18 months overall to finish.

“I didn’t have a ghost writer and it’s something I really enjoyed doing.

“I hope people like it, especially Burnley folk. There are some real ups and downs.”

Alice will be signing copies of her new book at W.H. Smith, Charterwalk, tomorrow (Saturday) between 11am and noon.
