Drop in sessions will update public on major roadworks in Burnley's Manchester Road

The sessions will be held on Monday (November 2) for people to hear the latest on the works at Manchester Road, and also Colne Road, with information available on upcoming night works and opportunities to ask questions and share feedback.

Drop in sessions will be held next week to update motorists and residents on roadworks that have caused months of major disruption in Burnley.

The sessions will be held on Monday ( November 2) for people to hear the latest on the works at Manchester Road. Information will also be available on upcoming night works and people will be invited to ask questions and share feedback.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We know the ongoing works are causing disruption and appreciate everyone’s patience. All substantial works are expected to be completed before Christmas, with most traffic management removed. “

The first session will be held between 1pm and 2pm at the Mechanics Theatre and a second session takes place in the evening, from 6pm to 7pm at Linkbridge Community Support Centre, Swinless Street.

Lancashire County Council has defended the major revamp amid huge amounts of criticism.

The ongoing scheme, which stretches between Nelson Square and Red Lion Street, is aimed at creating a safer and more accessible route while improving the appearance of one of the main approaches into Burnley town centre.

However, the scheme has met with widespread opposition from motorists, traders and Burnley MP Oliver Ryan who has criticised the scale, management and synchronicity of the works with other local projects (such as on Padiham Road and Barden Lane), describing the situation as "unbridled chaos" rather than controlled improvement.

Local shopkeepers and café owners, meanwhile, have reported a sharp drop in footfall (in some cases down by nearly half), and missed deliveries.

County Coun. Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said work was continuing to take shape and remained on schedule.

He said: “This is a major investment in Burnley and it's encouraging to see the scheme continuing to take shape.

“The project will deliver wider pavements, improved crossing facilities, enhanced public spaces and a safer, more accessible route for everyone who uses Manchester Road.

“We're making good progress and remain on course to have the main elements of the project substantially completed before the end of 2026.”

The overall project is scheduled for completion in January 2027, although the county council says work during the new year is expected to be largely limited to final finishing and completion activities.
