Burnley remembers The Fallen

Members of the Royal British Legion joined cadets and serving members of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment in lowering banners as the Last post echoed through the air and the evocative words of “Ode of Remembrance” echoed through the chill November air.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

Mayor of Burnley Coun. Andy Tatchell joined Burnley Borough Council chief executive Steve Rumbelow and Couns. John Harbour and Liz Monk for the service led by Fr Brian Keeley.

Proud veterans, complete with medals, joined members of the police and residents who gathered in Burnley’s Peace Garden, Croft Street, for the service.

It followed a similar service on Remembrance Sunday to remember all those from the borough who have given their lives in conflicts around the world up to the present day.

This year’s commemorations have taken on an added poignancy as this year marks a century since the beginning of the First World War – a conflict which claimed the lives of 4,212 souls from Burnley and Padiham.
