Burnley ready to roll out red carpet for Royals

The borough will welcome the Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH the Prince of Wales on Wednesday as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

As part of the visit the Royal family members will travel by barge from Finsley Gate Wharf to Slater Terrace at the heart of the town’s iconic Weavers’ Triangle.

Spectators will be able to see the three senior Royals getting off the barge at Sandygate Square from around 9-30 a.m. accompanied by Lord Shuttleworth.

A big screen outside will allow crowds to watch live footage of the tour round Slater Terrace as the Royals meet young people and organisations which have worked closely with the Prince’s Charities in Burnley.

The Royal Party will then attend the Prince’s Charities’ Regeneration Summit where Her Majesty The Queen will give a short speech beamed out on the big screen.

Crowds will be able to catch a glimpse of the Royal couple when they pass through the town centre on the way to the Burnley College and University of Central Lancashire campus from around 10 a.m.

The Queen and Duke will travel into the town centre in the Royal car, led by a Gurkha band. There will also be entertainment laid on to keep the crowds amused before the Royal couple arrive.

Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh will be taken on a tour of the college where a plaque will be unveiled in the lecture theatre.

To cap off the historic visit, Clarets chairman Barry Kilby will host a special lunch for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Turf Moor.

Burnley Football Club will open part of the James Hargreaves Stand at Turf Moor as a viewing area for the public. The Royal couple will appear briefly on a balcony overlooking the stadium, to view the bands, youth groups and school children assembled there.

Visitors can wave the Queen off as she leaves Turf Moor along Harry Potts Way around 2 p.m.
