Burnley mum's £130 shoplifting spree

Fiona Hodgson had so many problems she had got to the stage where she had thought of "ending it all" and had contacted the mental health team for help. She said: "I'm truly sorry," after she was caught thieving.

The 58-year-old sobbed as Burnley magistrates were told she was at risk of losing her home in the town because of anti-social behaviour by others at the property.

Hodgson, of Jockey Street, admitted theft on September 9th after she helped herself to serum and mascara. She was given a 12-month conditional discharge.

Mr Mark Williams, defending, said Hodgson waited for the police to attend and went to the station on a voluntary basis.

The defendant, who had an "extensive record," and is currently on a community order, had had no food for her and her dog. Mr Williams told the hearing: "It's quite clear everything is just getting on top of her."

The solicitor added: "It's all getting very difficult for her, but against that background she is working with the probation service and that is the hope going forward."
