Burnley garages help drive down crime

Motorists in Burnley are being offered free number plate screws as part of a drive to reduce car crime in the town.

This Saturday 11 May, neighbourhood police officers will be at Evans Halshaw Ford Garage on Eastern Avenue to fit the special screws which make it more difficult for thieves to steal registration plates.

Officers will also be on hand to offer crime prevention information and advice at the event which will take place between 11am and 3pm. The garage has agreed to continue fitting the screws for free to all cars which are taken in for repair, an MOT or a service.

PCSO Des Wrest, who is coordinating the event, said: “We’ve been fitting the screws to hundreds of cars ourselves at various events over the past few months but getting support from local garages is a fantastic step forward.

“It means that many more motorists can benefit from the tamper proof screws which greatly reduces the risk of thieves being able to easily obtain number plates to use for offences like petrol station drive offs.

“We will continue to hold events such as this and would encourage other garages to sign up to the scheme.”

Any garages wishing to join the initiative can contact PCSO Wrest by calling police on 101.
