The incident happened around 9pm on Sunday, December 29th, on a train between Wigan and Preston as the supporter was making his way home from Wigan.

The victim, a 41-year-old from Whalley, boarded the service with a friend and travelled in the same carriage as a group of Preston North End supporters.

PC Gary Clarke, from British Transport Police, said: “During the journey one of the Preston supporters became aggressive and made threatening comments to the victim and his friend.

“As the train arrived at Preston the offender attacked the victim causing a black eye. The abuse, and subsequent, assault was completely unprovoked.

“I am convinced the man in the CCTV images will be able to assist this investigation and I call on anyone who recognises him, or who has information, to come forward.”

Anyone with information should call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

• A 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged with a public order offence in relation to the incident.
