Brierfield Fire: Six fire engines at the scene of major house blaze

Nearby residents are being asked to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed due to thick smoke in the area.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue tweeted: "We have six fire engines dealing with a fire involving a detached garage and a bungalow at a house on Hillsborough Avenue, Brierfield. There is a lot of smoke in the area and if you can see it or smell it, please go inside and close windows and doors."

In a further tweet, he added: "We are working with partner agencies to bring the fire under control.@ElectricityNW. We will be switching off the electricity in the area shortly but we will work as quickly as we can so it can be turned on as soon as possible."
