Breaking news: Police investigating sexual assault on teenage girl in Burnley arrest man (20)

Detectives investigating the sexual assault of a teenage girl in Burnley have arrested a man today.

But officers today stressed that their inquiries were on-going and have renewed their appeal for information.

At around 4pm on Tuesday (May 26th) the victim had been walking along the canal path from Westgate, and was entering the steps adjacent to Cooper Street, when she was approached from behind by a male. He subjected her to a violent assault before touching her inappropriately.

She then kicked the male and at the same time she believes a member of the public may have appeared, walking nearby. At that point the offender made off back towards the canal path and the victim ran off to get help.

The victim, who is 17, was left with numerous cuts and bruises and severe swelling to her face and shoulder.

Following an appeal, police have today arrested a 20-year-old local man on suspicion of sexual assault.

He is currently in custody where he will be questioned by officers.

Police are continuing to urge anybody with information about the assault – including the member of the public who may have appeared on the scene – to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

DS Sarah Hargreaves, of Burnley Police, said: “While we have made an arrest I must stress our inquiries are very much on-going and I would continue to urge anyone with information to come forward.

“This was an extremely distressing ordeal for the girl involved and we remain determined to find the person responsible but we need the public’s help.

“We do recognise the concern this has caused in the community and we have extra patrols in the area for reassurance. Anybody with concerns is welcome to speak to those officers.”
