Bishop abseils down 90ft. church tower

The Bishop of Burnley took a church fund-raiser to new heights when he abseiled down the tower of St John’s Church in Whittle-le-Woods.

The Rt Rev. Philip North was the guest of honour at the fund-raiser where members of the congregation and the local community followed him down the 90ft tower.

He was helping the Lancashire parish church raise funds for a refurbishment.

He said that he found the experience terrifying and he now knows why God made us to walk on the ground.

“I like a challenge and this certainly qualified, it was absolutely terrifying,” said Bishop Philip. “The experience was so scary, I couldn’t believe how scary it was.

“But the event was for a very good cause and I was in good hands. I hope people donate to the church to help raise the refurbishment funds they need.”
