Barrow woman Nikki Bate (48) died after getting into difficulty off the shore of Famara Beach, near the resort of Caleta de Famara.

The tragedy happened on August 15th while Nikki was holidaying with her children India (14), Nathianiel (12) and 10-year-old Cameron plus husband Anthony (56).

Nikki screamed for help and Anthony bravely dived into the fierce waters to try to rescue her. He managed to grab her, but the strong riptide pulled them apart and she drowned.

At an inquest held last week at Blackburn Coroner’s Court, Anthony explained how despite attempts made by both himself and lifeguards to rescue his wife, she drowned.

East Lancashire Coroner Michael Singleton recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Born in Morecambe, Nikki moved with her family to Whalley at a young age. She attended Clitheroe Royal Grammar School.

More recently she was an active member of Friends of Whalley Primary School and volunteered for Home-Start Ribble Valley.

Family and friends described her as “a brilliant mother who was immensely proud of her children’s achievements”.
