Appeal for witnesses to unprovoked attack in Nelson park

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following an unprovoked assault on a man in Walverden Park in Nelson on Tuesday which left the victim with serious facial injuries.

The assault took place around 6-30 p.m. when the 33-year-old victim was walking through the park from the direction of Southfield Street towards Brunswick Street.

As he has walked passed a group of between eight to 10 young men they have attempted to trip him up before punching him to the back of the head. The victim fell to the ground where the group kicked him to the head a number of times.

The victim was knocked unconscious and sustained a cut and heavy swelling to his nose, bruising to both eyes and stiffness to his neck. He taken to Blackburn Royal Hospital by ambulance and stayed overnight.

The offenders are in their late teens and of Asian heritage.

Det. Sgt Neil Marr said: “This was an unprovoked and sustained attack on a lone man by a group who left him unconscious in the park.
