Stonyhurst College hosts antiques fair

Now in their 16th year at Stonyhurst, the twice-yearly Galloway fairs, featuring 30 reputable dealers, always attract great interest, with the next one taking place over the weekend of August 19th to 21st.

Among the dealers this time will be Mark Buckley, of Skipton, selling inlaid Edwardian furniture; Corn Mill Antiques, also from Skipton, who deal in small items of furniture, porcelain and decorative items; Drop Dial, of Bolton, specialising in clocks as the name suggests; and Oldfield Antiques, of Ilkley, who sell silver and silver plate.

Jewellers will include Once Upon A Time, Saul Greenstein and Scarab, and making their debut at Stonyhurst will be Plaza. Angling Antiques of Barnard Castle will have a selection of fishing-related items, always popular with the Lancashire crowd; Jim Dickinson, of Cheshire, will be selling antiquarian maps and prints; Bryan Chew, of Dorset, will be bringing along period oak, again very popular around Stonyhurst.

There will also be a few other new faces this time, no doubt thanks to the success of the February fair. Jo Bennett Originals will bring along a range of work by some of the North West’s leading artists. Salford-based painter Geoffrey Key, Yorkshire artist Susan Brown and Potteries-based Jiri Borsky each have international appeal, while many others, such as John Thompson and Trevor Grimshaw, have an unmistakable northern character.

Also on show will be the work of two Lancashire artists, Clitheroe’s Peter Taylor, who loves portraying the North East coast, and David C. Lyons, who specialises in animal and farmyard paintings admired here and the US.

Plumb’s Fine Art, of Shropshire, will also bring along paintings of distinction as well as contemporary bronze works of art.

Also making a welcome return will be M. & N. Oriental Rugs, from Manchester, with a colourful selection of oriental rugs and carpets to include Persian, Afghans, Aubussons and Xeiglers.

The antiques fair is open from 10-30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all three days.
