But today students at Nelson and Colne College have managed to put an end to their fears by unanimously securing a 100% pass rate.

There were plenty of cheers and huge sighs of relief as envelopes were opened and the UCAS website was searched.

And this year, there was even more reason to celebrate with 61% of students achieving A* to B grades – a percentage higher than last year.

This, says Principal Amanda Melton, is down to the “100% care and support” offered by the college, and the tireless efforts of the students and staff.

She said: “I am immensely chuffed at what the staff and students have done – it is tremendous. What we have been doing for the last 12 months is looking at the areas where students can perform better, and looking at what we can do. I am extremely pleased.”

For high-flyer Andleeb Shah, results day saw months of hard work and revision paying off – with the Biology, Chemistry and Maths student securing A*/A/A, as well as a place at Newcastle University.

The 18-year-old said: “I am so happy, relieved and excited.

“I was hoping for As, so the A* is just a bonus. I rang my family as soon as I opened my results, and they were really happy.”

Other high achievers at the college included Zohaib Zaman (18), who earned himself straight As in Biology Maths and Chemistry, Leonie Bowers (18), who also got three As in History, English and Law, and Miranda Badminton who bagged herself a set of four outstanding results.

Miranda, who achieved A*/A/A/B in her subjects Sociology, Psychology, Geography and English Language, will now be going on to read Law at the University of Sheffield.

She said: “I was a little bit nervous when I came in, but overwhelmed with the results.

“I have got onto the scholarship that I wanted with my grades.”

Also delighted with the news of Nelson and Colne College’s continued success is Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, who said: “These are outstanding results once again, and this is a real testimony to the hard work of the students and teachers over the past year.”

And Coun. Paul White, who also attended results morning at the college, added: “I think it is excellent that Nelson and Colne College have done the best they have ever done.

“The college is working very hard, and Amanda is doing very well as Principal.”
