It is believed work to dig a cellar under a house in Burnley may have contributed to its dramatic collapse on Thursday morning.

Herbert Street, Burnley, was cordoned off and neighbours evacuated after the front wall of the mid-terraced house started to collapse around 4am.

Neighbour James Rhodes (47) told how he woke to find the front of the house next door had collapsed into the road and rubble all over his car.

Mr Rhodes said: “I just kept thinking if it was all going to go, it would take me with it.”

Firefighters said excavation work carried out underneath the building had caused it to collapse and said while storms and high winds were not directly responsible they could have contributed to the collapse.
