‘Nelson has lowest house prices in UK for public sector workers’
NELSON has the lowest house prices in the United Kingdom for key public sector workers, according to new figures from the Halifax.
A survey, based on the ratio of average house prices to average earnings, places Nelson at the top of the list of affordable towns for firefighters, teachers and nurses and second to Newtownabbey, County Antrim, for police officers.

Hide AdNelson is said to have a ratio of 2.4 - housing is deemed to be affordable where the ratio is below four - with Bootle having the same figure and Darwen one of 2.5.
The survey showed 41% of towns were now affordable to the average key worker, whereas in 2007 just 12 towns in the whole of the UK met the criteria.
