Colne Town Council, which manages over 140 allotments around Colne over 21 sites, organised the competition which this year was won by Derek Denwood.

Members of the public voted on their favourite picture chosen from the 12 finalists that judges Couns Alice Mann and Howard Thomas whittled down.

Judges were also delighted to see the enthusiasm of entrants in the Young Gardener category, hearing how they have been making banana compost and growing on their allotments and at home.

Other prize winners include Julian Nowak in the Best Young Gardner Category, and Fran Vigano for the Best Colne Town Council Allotment Plot.

Coun. Alice Mann, chairman of the Allotments Committee, said: "Before and after photos Derek submitted show how much hard work had been put into his plot this year.

"This year’s competition has been tough to judge because it is clear how much time and effort entrants have put into their plots. Photos have shown bountiful crops, well-organised raised-beds and creative constructions from trellises to scarecrows."

The allotments have proved a great reason for people to get out and dig during this year’s lockdown. Colne Town Council’s allotment community is growing with waiting lists on many sites, but don’t let that put you off as waiting lists help the council assess demand.
