David Erskine Builders, Barrow, was selected as the best local builder for traditional craftsmanship in the annual Local Authority Building Control Awards.

Building control officers at Ribble Valley Council nominated the company for the North-West awards, which cover Lancashire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

The awards “celebrate the essence of good buildings” and the judges looked for technical excellence, innovation, green and sustainable building quality, team working with local councils, performance and problem solving.

Mr Erskine took his team to the regional presentation ceremony at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton, and learned of their success on the night.

He said: “I never expected to win.

“I’m really pleased, and the lads are even more pleased than I am. I know they do a good job, so it’s been good for them.”

The company will now go forward to national finals in November.

Mr Erskine has been a builder in the Ribble Valley for more than 20 years, and formed his own company some 11 years ago.

He said: “We specialise in one-off projects that need traditional skills, like extensions, single houses and conversions. We don’t do speculative developments.

“We have a good relationship with the building control people at Ribble Valley, and it was good of them to nominate us for the award.”
