Cliviger has four villages – Holme, Walk Mill, Mereclough, and Sothward Bottom – and is one of the largest parishes in England, but, until 1894, it was larger still as Cornholme and Porstmouth were removed to be included in the new Borough of Todmorden.
9. Ormerod House
Though part of the Towneley estate is in Cliviger, the big house in the township was Ormerod House. The property can be dated to the thirteenth century but the building shown in the image is as it was when the Thursby family lived there. They received Prince Albert Victor, the grandson of Queen Victoria, when he came to Burnley to open the Queen Victoria Hospital, in 1886. When in town, he became the first member of the royal family to attend a football match. This gave Burnley FC one of their early nicknames,” the Royals” Photo: S
