It was like Christmas all over again for youngsters at a sparkling Blackpool fair. But it was not just toys that were on show at the town's Winter Gardens. Glass and jewellery, pottery and knick-knacks were all on display to dazzle at the annual Gifts Fair. Pictured showing off trendy bags are Ian Cross of Morecambe and Katie Wright of Bridlington

They pump out success as frequently as petrol at this Wesham filling station. Station Road Garage has picked up the Shell Shine Trophy for the 10th year in succession, in a contest organised between 1,500 petrol stations. Helen and Geoffrey Dobson run the forecourt and shop with the help of Shirley Tait. The regional award carried a £250 prize and judges look for standards of appearance, friendliness and safety

Reg Brittain spends between £5m and £6m a year and doesn't tell his wife where a penny of it goes. His lifestyle doesn't reflect his spending habits. He lives in a modest semi-detached bungalow down Manor Road, Garstang. But his spending days are numbered. Soon he retires after nearly half a century in Lancashire's paper trade at the United Paper Mills
