Merle, who is from Blackburn but attended the Clitheroe secondary school, studied A-Level English Language, history and media at the Feilden Street college, achieving B, A and A respectively in those subjects.

Her chosen language for her degree will be Spanish.

Merle (18) said: “The main appeal of studying at Blackburn College for me was the courses, including the fact I couldn’t do media studies anywhere else near me. Also, it’s only a short bus journey from where I live, making the campus easily accessible at all times.

“The best part of the courses for me was the breadth of knowledge that you gain from each subject, which in turn showed me what I would want to study after progressing from A-Levels. I also got to study subjects I was genuinely interested in, meaning that I felt engaged in the lessons.

“The staff were very encouraging about getting work experience placements. Mine was at BBC Radio Lancashire and this was valuable for me in terms of teaching me about how the world of media and journalism works.

“In tutorial, we did a lot of research about universities and careers, and this has made me think more deeply about what I want to do in the future.

“The tutors have been really helpful in answering any questions I had and, at some points, there were a lot! They solved any problems I had, whether it was with the course content, exams or my future beyond Blackburn College. This all encouraged me to apply to a top university.”
