David Lord has been getting up at 5am every day from Monday to Friday so he can train before going in to work at the college.

He is hoping to raise £2,500 for LAM Action, which provides support for women with lymphangioleiomyomatosis, better known as LAM, and also raises funds for research into the condition, which only affects women.

“I feel it’s a very worthwhile charity which can be overlooked because of the attention attracted by bigger charities,” said David, who will be running in the famous marathon on Sunday April 22nd.

Around 350 women in the UK are believed to have LAM, which progressively destroys lung tissue, leading to breathing problems, and can also cause benign kidney tumours.

David (40) became aware of LAM Action because his friend Matt Sharples’ wife, Sarah, suffers from LAM and had to have a kidney removed as a result.

“This will be the fourth time I’ve run in a marathon, but it is the first time I have been sponsored to raise funds for a charity and I am really looking forward to it,” said David, who is married to Mandy, a district nurse, and has three daughters Elise (15) Cameron (12) and Harper, aged five.

“I’m aiming for a time of around four hours 10 minutes. I train five times a week.

“All my daughters and my wife will be coming to see me in the London Marathon, and are really happy that I am running in it for LAM Action.”
