Burnley primary school pupils on the ball for charity with penalty shoot-out

Staff and pupils at Burnley’s Heasandford Primary School, one of Lancashire’s largest with 620 children on its register, were on the ball for Rosemere Cancer Foundation when this year’s Sports Relief Day came along.

Everyone swapped their uniform and normal clothes for sportswear, paying £1 for the privilege so raising £550 for the charity. Pupils then took part in a penalty shoot-out competition before watching staff battle it out in a bench ball match - activities all co-ordinated by learning mentor Gayle Ponton.

Deputy head Laura Campbell-Starling said: “We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are grateful to Gayle for all her hard work to make the day happen. We support Sport Relief but always choose to donate to a local charity and this time around picked Rosemere Cancer Foundation as a number of staff have had family members undergo treatment at Rosemere Cancer Centre.”

Rosemere Cancer Foundation works to bring world class cancer treatments and services to cancer patients from throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria being treated at Rosemere Cancer Centre, the region’s specialist cancer treatment centre at the Royal Preston Hospital, and at another eight local hospital cancer units across the two counties, including those at Burnley General Teaching and the Royal Blackburn Hospital.
