One of those taking advantage of the opportunity to feed her curiosity and develop her passion for her favourite subject is Megan Lucas (17), a former pupil at Whitworth High School, who is completing her first year of A-level study in English language and literature, chemistry and biology.

She has chosen to study a chemistry course entitled “Science & Cooking: From Haute Cuisine to Soft Matter Science” which will provide her with a verified certificate in food science – a subject she intends to study when she progresses to University next year.

Head of A-levels Sarah Crossley said: “Completing this highly-relevant course will give Megan the extra edge when it comes to her application to study at university.

"There aren’t many students who can say they’ve completed an online course with one of the top universities in America and Megan will really stand out from the crowd with this.

“Megan is investing just a few hours each week, over a six-week period, to complete her course. We’re incredibly proud of her, as we are of all our outstanding students. Throughout the period when we have switched to online teaching and learning due to Government restrictions, our students have shown commitment, resilience and determination.

"They have taken every opportunity offered to them to enhance their learning, access individualised support from their Tutors and explore their subjects in even greater depth.”

Burnley College Sixth Form Centre principal Karen Buchanan added: “Our tutors have worked tirelessly to provide the academic materials that every student needs to continue their development and have also searched out the very best opportunities for those students who want to go above and beyond to take their skills, knowledge and experience to the highest possible level.

"It is this commitment to ensuring every student is given the opportunity to be the very best that has led to Burnley College being recognised as the number one College in England in the latest, official Government achievement tables.”
