Members of Clitheroe u3a once again had an entertaining afternoon, at their monthly Main Meeting at St. Mary’s Hall. This time, it was due to an amusing, yet thought-provoking talk entitled, ‘The History of Advertising’, by Frank Vigon.

Frank is a most engaging and experienced Speaker. He captivated his audience with his lively delivery and his technical expertise, showing numerous photographs, many of which were enriched by sound and movement.

His talk sought to ‘unpick the very influential world of Vance Packard’s ‘Hidden Persuaders’.’

He explained how advertisers target our weaknesses, such as ‘hunger, greed, sex and envy and all of the five senses – to make us BUY!

Frank traced the history of advertising, from ancient times to the present day and explained that in modern times, advertisers ‘leave no stone unturned, invading our world, from street to television, from television to iphone, from iphone to Alexa and into the very recesses of our minds!’

It was strong stuff (but fun)! It certainly made you think!

Our next Main Meeting is on Tuesday afternoon, on November 12th at St. Mary’s Hall, Clitheroe. Light refreshments will be served from 1.30 and then Brian Topping will be giving his talk entitled, ‘Custom Officers Part 1’.
