Downham Apple Day takes place on 12th October, from 12-4
Downham Village Hall will host Bowland Apple Day this year, inviting people to bring their own apples to make apple juice. Two crushers have been kindly donated to the event, which is supported by the Pendle Hill Legacy Fund/Champion Bowland, and local volunteers will be on hand to help turn orchard apples into juice to take away for fridge or freezer storage (people will need to bring their own washed apples and sterilised containers). An expert will be on hand to help people identify their apples, investigating some local varieties that may be rare or unusual.
The fun day will also feature cider and apple juice bars, calvados shots and cocktails and special apple sausages in a bun created by Anne at Roy Porter Butchers, using apple pulp from Downham Estate, and expertly prepared and served by the team from Greendale View Teahouse. Folk musicians, crafts, raffle and produce stalls (and perhaps some surprising pumpkins!) will add to the autumnal and festive atmosphere.
Says organiser, Kate Herron: “We see so many apples go to waste – and this year has been a bumper crop – so we thought it would be a good idea to give people the opportunity to bring some along and turn them into juice that can be enjoyed by family and friends.” All proceeds from the day will go to the Downham Village Hall Improvement Project.
