Burnley Together's Down Town community hub benefits from Northern Community Bank donation

A Burnley community hub that supports hundreds of local people has received a funding boost as part of a £20,000 donation from Northern Community Bank.

The account holder-owned organisation, formerly known as Pennine Community Credit Union, approved the funding at its Annual General Meeting, with the money being shared equally between selected community centres providing essential services to residents.

Among those to benefit is Burnley Together's Down Town community hub in Burnley, which offers a welcoming space where people can access advice, support and affordable essentials.

Nicola Larnach, manager of Burnley Together, thanked Northern Community Bank for its support.

She said: “Burnley Together would like to thank Northern Community Bank for its generous donation, which will help keep the doors of Down Town open and ensure essential support remains available to local residents.

“Down Town is a warm and welcoming community space where everyone can come together, seek advice, access support, or simply spend time with others. It provides access to affordable food, school uniforms, clothing and sports kit, while also connecting people to services and opportunities that help improve wellbeing, confidence and resilience.

“As part of Burnley Together's mission to bring years to life and life to years, Down Town strengthens community connections and creates opportunities for people to thrive. This valued contribution from Northern Community Bank will enable us to continue responding to local needs and provide early support that makes a lasting difference.”

Northern Community Bank provides savings accounts, affordable loans and financial education to help people build stronger financial futures.

Development officer Lee Banks said community centres play an essential role in supporting people of all ages.

He said: “Many of our community centres play a vital role in society, helping all areas of the community from young to old. They provide everything from health and wellbeing classes to Cubs and Brownies, employment support, warm hubs and, in some cases, accommodation. They are often seen as a lifeline, helping to tackle social isolation and providing food support for those in need.

“Despite the incredible work they do, many community centres receive little funding and rely heavily on fundraising and donations to continue supporting people.

“As a not-for-profit community bank, it is amazing that we can support our community centres and demonstrate our commitment to the people in the areas we serve.”
