The temporary measure, which the Burrnley Conservative group began campaigning for last week, is to allow customers more time in town now shops are reopening with social distancing guidelines in place.

Coun. Alan Hosker, leader of the Burnley Conservatives, said: "It takes extra time in the shops so extending the time shoppers can park for free in Burnley is something that will help local businesses in the centre.

"I'm glad have been able to work with my colleagues both in Burnley and LCC to make it happen."

Peter Bell, regulation and enforcement manager for Lancashire County Council, said: "We're working closely with district and borough councils throughout the county to safely reopen town centres and make it easier for people to maintain social distancing in busy areas.

"We recognise that the measures which businesses have introduced to prevent the spread of the virus mean that short visits to the shops may take longer than usual, and will be temporarily extending the time allowed to park in some limited-waiting bays in Burnley town centre from 40 minutes to 1 hour from next week.

“Our High streets need our help and that’s why I’m encouraging everybody to shop local, but there is an issue about how long it takes to queue up for the shops. I'm pleased to see the Conservative Group on the Council are taking a pro-active approach to this and I back the idea of increasing free on street parking from 40 mins to an hour".
